in step

viki holmes - Wales

number 10

has a windmill

on a chain

about her neck

and no name

and she smiles

tilts my right foot

toward her

and i don’t know

how it works

but it does

and it is gone midnight

and the band

on the floor below

plays hard rock

you can hear them

through the elevator

then quiet

and nodding

and always smiles

that’s all you got

when you got

no cantonese

and all i see is you

beside another bed

taking off your shoe

pressing your thumbs

to your instep

talking me through it:

how it starts

and i stand, watching

your fingers move

a little

breathless

and i don’t know

why it gets me

but it does

you could have done

anything

with me then

a closeness

you don’t mention

even when you share

a language
