Picasso's Promenade

Jacques Prevert - France

On a very round plate of real porcelainan apple posesface to face with ita painter of realityvainly tries to paintthe apple as it isbutthe apple won't allow itthe appleit has its word to say about itand several tricks in its bag of applesand there it is turningon its real plateartfully on itselfblandly without budgingand like a Duc de Guise who disguises himself as a gas ductbecause they want to draw his portrait against his willthe apple disguises itself as a beautiful fruit in disguiseand it's thenthat the painter of realitybegins to realizethat all the appearances of the apple are against himandlike the unfortunate pauperlike the poor pauper who finds himself suddenly at the mercy of no matter what benevolent and charitable and redoubtable association of benevolence charity and redoubtabilitythe unfortunate painter of realitythen suddenly finds himself the sad preyof a numberless crowd of associations of ideasAnd the apple turning evokes the apple treethe earthly Paradise and Eve and then Adama watering-can a trellis Parmentier a stairwayCanadian Hesperidian Norman apples Reinette apples and Appian applesthe serpent of the Tennis Court and the Oath of Apple Juiceand original sinand the origins of artand Switzerland with William Telland even Isaac Newtonseveral times prizewinner at the Exhibition of Universal Gravitationand the dazed painter loses sight of his modeland falls asleepIt's just then that Picassowho's going by there as he goes by everywhereevery day as if at homesees the apple and the plate and the painter fallen asleepWhat an idea to paint an applesays Picassoand Picasso eats the appleand the apple tells him Thanksand Picasso breaks the plateand goes off smilingand the painter drawn from his dreamslike a toothfinds himself all alone again before his unfinished canvaswith right in the midst of his shattered chinathe terrifying pips of reality.
